The Most Important Artists of 2013

The website Complex, about music, sports, style, art and design, and much more, has made a list of ‘The Most Important Artists of 2013’.

1. Number 1 is the world famous street artist Banksy. As Complex said right, “Love him or hate him, Banksy owned this year and changed the dialogue about art and history forever.” True that.

6. Number 6 is our own Jeff Koons. Koons set a new World Auction Record For A Living Artist this year, and he held solo exhibitions at David Zwirner and Gagosian Gallery.

7. Number 7 is one of our favorites as well, the feministic performance artist Marina Abramovic. Firstly, Abramovic appeared in Jay-Z’s music video ‘Picasso Baby’. Also, Marina created a film of Lady Gaga practicing ‘The Abramovic Method’. Last but not least, Marina reached her $600,000 to found the Marina Abramovic Institute (MAI).

8. Number 8 is French artist JR, who also had a solo exhibition at Unseen 2013, Inside Out. His black and white portraits of civilians conquered the world in 2013.


10. Number 10 is our favorite duo in the world: the Dutch partners in crime,  photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. They had an exhibition at Gagosian Gallery in Paris. They have worked together with Lady Gaga, photographing her naked for V Magazine and directed her ‘An Artpop Film’.

11. Yayoi Kusama, one of Famous’ favorite artists is number 11. Kusama has had a solo exhibition at David Zwirner Gallery, ‘I Who Have Arrived At Heaven’. The exhibition took over the gallery space’s three showrooms with large-scale installations made up of twinkling lights and psychedelic paintings. Also, Kusama designed the whole set and costume for a shoot with George Clooney for W Magazine ‘The Art Issue’.

15. Number 15 is one of Famous favorite artists as well, James Turrell. This year, he transformed the Guggenheim’s rotunda with his amazing light installation. At the same time, he was taking over four other museums in America.

Overall, it has been a fantastic year for the arts, with both new and old talents and countless great exhibitions and projects. We cannot wait to see what the art world has in store for us in 2014!
