Ma Réalité Rêvée, the beautiful book accompanying Irina Ionesco’s exhibition of the same name at Reflex Amsterdam, is now for sale at Famous Amsterdam. The book is published by Reflex in cooperation with Zoo Magazine and comes in an edition of only 450, 150 of which include an original print signed by Irina Ionesco. All books are signed and numbered by the artist too.
The exhibition at Reflex Amsterdam ends this month (go see it!) and features a large selection of vintage prints by the Romanian photographer who spent most of her life in Paris. Known for her theatrical, neo-surrealist eroticism, Ionesco has created a timeless body of work featuring poetic but natural nudes presented in often dark and complex arrangements.
The book contains contributions by dr. Matthias Harder, chief curator of the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, and Pierre-Paul Puljiz, a French film producer, documentary filmmaker, and writer. The first offers a art-historical appreciation of Ionescu’s work and places it in the photographical tradition. Puljiz’ text presents a more biographical take on Irina Ionesco’s career. Tracing her life through family trauma, heartbreaking separation, abandonment and forced exile, it is clear that a singular oeuvre finds it origins in a singular life.
The rest of the book is full of high quality reproductions of the photographs that are on show at Reflex. It is, in short, a must have for all lovers of photography and at only €85 an instant collectors item. Buy it here!
