Mark Ryden (1963) is an American painter from Medford, he now works and lives in Eagle Rock, California. Ryden blends themes from popular culture with techniques reminiscent of the old masters, utilizing a classical style of painting to create quirky oddly realistic creatures and figures. With his work Ryden ushered in a new genre of painting called Pop Surrealism. His style ranges from cute to cryptic and it also often includes nostalgia and cliché imagery with childhood innocence. The subtle disquiet of his works is achingly beautiful, as it hints at darker undertones and meanings. Ryden has also designed album covers for several artists like Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jeff Beck and Ringo Starr, just to name a few.
