Matthew Barney (1967) is an American artist from San Francisco. Barney is best known for his Cremaster Cycle (1994-2002); a series of five feature length films that explore the process of creation. The project is rife with anatomical allusions to the position of the reproductive organs during the embryonic process of sexual differentiation. In his Drawing Restraint series (1987-now) he experiments with restraining the body while attempting to make drawings. Barney uses film, sculpture, drawings, photography and performances as his artistic expressions.
