Paul McCarthy (1945) is an American contemporary artist from Salt Lake City, he now works and lives in Los Angeles. In his early works, McCarthy sought to break the limitations of painting, by using the body as a paintbrush, often not only using paint but also sauces such as ketchup and mayonnaise and bodily fluids and excrement. He then moved towards performances where he sought to test the emotional limits of both himself as well as the viewer. In recent years McCarthy works mainly in video and sculpture, though still not shunning controversy. One of his recent works Complex Shit created quite a stir in Bern, Switzerland, as the giant inflatable turd took of in a gust of wind, creating havoc and destruction in its flight path until it was caught.
