Roger Ballen (1950) is an American photographer from New York, he now works and lives in Johannesburg, South Africa. Ballen primarily depicts the villages of rural South Africa and its inhabitants. Initially documenting the people and the settings as they were, he soon moved to the realms of fiction, by placing his subjects in a painterly and sculptural manner, in ways that aren’t immediately associated with photographs. Ballen seeks to give a reflection of his own psyche through his photographs.
