Barry Reigate in Dismaland

27 August 2015

The mysterious graffiti artist Banksy has unveiled his latest project,  a grim, anti-theme park called “Dismaland,” featuring his art and works by about 60 other artists including Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer and Barry Reigate. Banksy will show 10 new works at the site, The Weston, Worle & Somerset Mercury reported.

Dismaland’s website describes the park as a “festival of art, amusements and entry-level anarchism” and an “alternative to the sugar-coated tedium of the average family day out.”

Dismaland includes a contemporary art gallery; a “gothic sculpture park” housed in a tent; a bonfire where books by the much-maligned novelist Jeffrey Archer, a local lord, will be incinerated daily; and an “oil caliphate themed” mini-golf course. A number of musicians, including Kate Tempest and members of Pussy Riot, will perform concerts during Dismaland’s five-week run.

In the first week, the park’s website crashed, causing chaos and long cues. After rumours that this was a deliberate attempt to make the place even bleaker, Banksy’s spokeswoman released a statement that the crash was unintentional and that tickets will again be available on the website.
