Hirst’s Cock and Bull

4 June 2012

That London is a trendy city where innovative design, art and culinary experimentation are at the order of the day is no secret. But it’s not often that all three elements are merged into one venture. Tramshed is a trendy London eatery where the menu focuses primarily on steak and chicken dishes. The famous grade-2 listed tramshed building (1905) where the restaurant is situated has been decorated in a sober but aesthetically pleasing fashion.

But most importantly: at the centre of the restaurant a very special piece catches diner’s eyes immediately upon entering the space: An enormous steel and glass tank of formaldehyde stands 4 metres above diners, containing a preserved Hereford cow and cockerel. The piece, titled Cock and Bull, has been created especially for the restaurant by Damien Hirst, in 2012 and forms part of his Natural History series, Hirst’s collection of preserved animals.

Hirst also created a painting entitled Beef and Chicken (2012) to go alongside the imposing formaldehyde piece. The painting depicts the famous 1990 cartoon characters Cow and Chicken, who were featured in their own cartoon series on Cartoon Network. Beef and Chicken is installed on the mezzanine level of the restaurant.

So should you be in London, and feel a bit peckish and in dire need of a slice of art: make your way to Tramshed and be amazed by Hirst’s newest artworks! Nice detail: on May 30th the Cock ‘n Bull Art Gallery will open its doors in the basement of Tramshed, where you will be able to see rotating exhibitions as well as a curated library.
