Glass Paintings by Marcus Harvey
Reflex Editions Amsterdam
British artist Marcus Harvey’s work always leaves a lasting impression. From his groundbreakingSensation show at London’s Royal Academy of Arts (1997) where he shocked audiences with an enormous portrait of serial killer Myrna Hyndley, made out of child-sized handprints, to the pieces which were showcased at the Glass Paintings exhibition at Reflex Amsterdam: his work captivates and intrigues.
Most of the paintings exhibited in this show in 2012 haven’t been exhibited before. The pieces cast the viewer in the role of Peeping Tom, as they look through the distorted glass of a glass door to the world beyond. From lone toilet-rolls, to skulls, to a child in a batman costume: the works are strongly voyeuristic, humorous and mysterious. There’s more than meets the eye, and Marcus Harvey has captivated this sense. To coincide with the exhibition a beautiful limited edition book is published by Reflex Editions.
