Christiaan Karel Appel (1921-2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and poet from Amsterdam, he worked and lived in Zürich, Switzerland. Appel was one of the main artists and founders of the CoBrA (Copenhagen, Bruxelles, Amsterdam) movement in 1948, together with Corneille, Constant, Jan Nieuwenhuys and Christian Dotremont. His work was expressive and raw and in the early days even controversial, due to his wild and colourful painting style for which he often used bright colours like yellow, blue, green and even pink, and his use of all kinds of used materials in sculptural works (assemblage).
Famous Amsterdam sells a large collection of Karel Appel lithographs and ceramics. Please do not hesitate to contact us for enquiries.
