Samuel Lewis Francis (1923 – 1994) was an American painter and printmaker from California. After being injured in a plane crash in WWII, he was hospitalized for several years, during which he started to paint. After he was released from hospital, he returned to Berkeley to study art. Francis was initially influenced by abstract expressionists, such as Mark Rhotko. He spent the 1950’s in Paris, having his first exhibition there in 1952, then moved to Japan before returning to California in the 1960’s where he spent the last decades of his life working in Los Angeles.
