James Turrell returns to New York after 33 years

11 April 2013

guggenheim-lit-upOn June 21st 2013, James Turrell, an American artist mostly known for his installations with light and space, is going to take over the Guggenheim Museum in New York. He’s going to transform the Guggenheim’s typical structures into something otherworldly and mind-blowing, with the use of shifting colour and ambient (artificial as well as natural) light. It recasts the Guggenheim’s rotunda as an enormous, volcanic volume filled with light. It proposes an entire different experience of the iconic building by Frank Lloyd Wright.

This exhibition is very exciting, because it’s Turrell’s first museum show in New York since 1980. It’s a collaboration between the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

The curator of the show is Richard Andrews, who says: “Turrell’s material is light, and he creates these occasions for us to experience it.”
Nat Trotman, cocurator of the show says: “You may think you love Turrell’s art. But until you experience it in person, you don’t really get it. It’s pretty anti-conceptual – It’s about the feelings that it creates for you.”
