Pharrell visits Takashi Murakami

20 January 2016

Takashi Murakami unveiled his first exhibition in Japan in 14 years, “The 500 Arhats”, at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo on October 31st, 2015. It will run until March 6th, 2016. During the preparations for the exhibition superstar Pharell visited Murakami’s studio.

In the studio, Pharell, tries on different costumes made by Murakami while he takes a look at the techniques Murakami has used for this exhibition. Some of these stand out. We can, for instance, see how Murakami’s assistants hand paint on screen printed images.

One of the most impressive images in the short clip is a new ‘100 meter painting’ that was inspired by the natural disaster that hit Japan in 2011. The painting features several ‘monsters’ as well as Buddhist followers (the Arhats), all of which are depicted in Takashi Murakami’s well know blend of traditional and contemporary Japanese aesthetics.

To mark this new exhibition, Famous offers one of Takashi Murakami’s new signature prints in its webshop. The ‘Red Demon and Blue Demon with 48 Arhats’ is now for sale at €1799.  Visit the store or contact us for more information!

Takashi Murakami (1963) is a Japanese Neo Pop-Art artist from Itabashi, he works and lives in Tokyo and New York. His art seeks to break the barriers between low and high art, using imagery that’s inspired by Manga and Anime figures. In 1996 he created the Hiropan Factory reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s The Factory, where his assistants cooperate with him on his artworks. Time placed Murakami in its list of 100 most influential people in 2008. He was the only visual artist that made the list.
