President Obama inspires the art world at the Rijksmuseum

25 March 2014

Yesterday on the 24th of March the US president Barack Obama visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam while being in Holland for the Nuclear Security Summit 2014. He had a spectacular arrival by helicopter at the Rijksmuseum to give a special visit to some of his favourite paintings, among which the Nightwatch by Rembrandt van Rijn. According to Obama himself, his most favourite painting was the Milkmaid of Johannes Vermeer.

Famous is a big fan of president Obama, especially because he is a great art-lover! As appeared from his visit to the Rijksmuseum, he has a great interest in the old masters of art. However, Obama is also happy to be an inspiring model for various contemporary artists. For example, artist “Obey” Shepard Fairey became world-famous after photographing Obama for one of his posters. Other artists are Nadav Kander, Martin Schoeller and president Obama was even willing to be photographed by the celebrated and controversial photographer Terry Richardson

Wim Pijbes, director of the Rijksmuseum, used the special occasion of Obamas’ visit for publicity for the Rijksmuseum and its world-famous artworks. The photograph of Obama in front of Rembrandts’ Nightwatch appeared today worldwide on the frontpages of all major newspapers, including the New York Times. As being former curator of Kunsthal Rotterdam, Wim Pijbes is actively engaged in contemporary art. He has written the introduction of the two modern art books titled “Animal Abstraction” by Roger Ballen and “The Rape of Africa” by David Lachapelle. The books are available on
