Martin Parr is a contemporary British photographer. Best known as a chronicler of modern life in provincial England, Parr’s often humorous and unconventional close observation of human behaviors serves as a mirror to reflect society’s values. The anthropological artist explores themes of consumerism, globalization, and social stratification through a lens of realism, as exemplified in his seminal photobook of seaside vacationers, The Last Resort (1986). Born on May 23, 1952 in Epsom, Surrey, England, Parr studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic from 1970 until 1973, and joined the famed cooperative Magnum Photos in 1994. He has also pursued filmmaking and commercial work while continuing to publish many photobooks.  He currently lives and works in Northern Ireland.
