Recreating iconic images: Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich and Yasumasa Morimura

24 September 2014

To honour the photographers that have inspired him throughout his career, Sandro Miller has recreated their most iconic images.  In a new exhibition that opens at the Catherine Edelmann Gallery in Chicago this November you can see (among many others) Annie Leibovitz’s picture of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Bert Stern’s photograph of Marilyn Monroe or Irving Penn’s photograph of Truman Capote.

Yasumasa MorimuraThis time, however, there is also another familiar face in the pictures. Sandro Miller has asked his friend John Malkovich to pose for each and every one of them. With wigs, a lot of make up and elaborate costumes the famous actor stars in the 35 iconic photographs.

Miller’s photos reminded Famous of Yasumasa Morimura’s work. Morimura (1951), who was born in Japan and studied in the US, has used famous portraits and images too, sometimes recreating the whole setting and sometimes only replacing the face of the original with his own face. From Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, the Mona Lisa and Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits, to pictures of Michael Jackson and Madonna: throughout his career, Morimura has made the viewer think about appropriation and the nature of a ‘self-portrait’.

When looking at Malkovich and Morimura, some of the most interesting examples are the portraits of Che Guevara, Albert Einstein and Salvador Dali, which have been recreated by both Miller and Morimura.
